She's The First, Non-profit
Unfortunately, there are still places where it is not the norm for girls to receive an education. Did you know that 2/3 of the world’s 781 million illiterate adults are women and 15 million girls under 18 are married each year worldwide? With an education, females earn up to 20% more as an adult with each additional year of schooling, is less likely to marry early and more likely to be in a healthy relationship, has fewer, healthier children, and changes the world around her for the better.
Noteworthy organization, She’s the First (STF), is fighting this gender inequality through education. STF is a nonprofit that works to support girls who will be among the first in their families to graduate high school and trains students everywhere to be global leaders. STF was originally a social media campaign started by Tammy Tibbetts to inspire and motivate Millennials to support girls’ education globally. When she shared the idea on Facebook, Christen Brandt, immediately took notice and together they launched STF as co-founders in November, 2009. Tammy, a first generation college graduate in her family, used her previous expertise in journalism and social and digital media to launch successful fundraising campaigns to support STF. Christen who also came from a magazine journalism background combined her experiences with activism to help grow STF as a grassroots movement into a worldwide movement.
STF now has programs in 11 low-income countries, reaching millions and has changed lives for 1000 STF graduates. There are 200 STF chapters around the world that encourage leadership, community engagement, and global citizenship to help girls like Janani, Roshni, and Fatou get even closer to realizing their dreams.
We support STF’s mission and education for girls everywhere. That’s why Pause. is pledging with fellow female founders of sustainable brands – Par en Par, Coclico, OTEM, and Seek Collective – to donate 20% of all sales made on International Day of the Girl on October, 11, 2018 to STF. So mark your calendars for this special event because when a girl is educated, she is UNSTOPPABLE.
